不同的文化对「厕所」有不同的说法，除了toilet还有什么用字呢?

网上流传一则笑话，秘书在上厕所时，美国老板打电话来：“Where are you？”秘书慌忙之中回答：“I'm in the toilet！”老板惊呼：“What are you doing in the toilet?！”（你在马桶里干什么？！ ）

「上厕所」有好几种说法

虽然都是英文，但是不同的文化对「厕所」有不同的说法。英国人叫厕所“toilet”或“loo”，其中后者又更口语：

I'll just go to the loo. （我正要上厕所。）

菲律宾厕所的说法是“comfort room”（舒适的房间），简称 CR。美国最常见的厕所叫法是 “restroom”，或直接说“men’s room”、“ladies' room”，就像我们中文会用「洗手间」代替厕所一样。

而toilet在美式英文里是指「马桶」，抽水马桶的全名是flush toilet。所以“I'm in the toilet”，听起来就好像是「我在马桶里」。

“In the toilet”字面意思是掉到马桶，进而可以引申为「处在很糟糕、窘迫的局面」（In a miserable, pitiful, or very unfortunate condition）。

I just can't find work with the economy in the toilet like this.

经济情况糟成这样，我没法找到工作。

Go down the toilet =搞砸了

只要和马桶相关，想必都不会太好，相近的片语是go down the toilet，就像把东西冲进马桶一样，意思是「搞砸了、泡汤了」：

After the drug scandal, his career went down the toilet.

涉毒丑闻之后，他的事业也砸了。

They didn't want to see their investment go down the toilet.

他们不想看到投资就这样泡汤了。

Toilet water ＝ 厕所水？

在商场里听到有人要买toilet water，千万不要太惊讶，以为他要买厕所水。

Toilet water从法文“Eau de toilette”衍生而来，像花露水这种不贵的香水。根据Collins字典的解释：Toilet water is fairly weak and inexpensive perfume. （”Toilet water”是很淡且不贵的香水。）
